    Description

DESCRIPTION – In my shop at Alfies Antiques in central London I do like to have a selection of cufflinks – both for men and women.  Particularly popular are these vintage mid century, gold tone ones that have a picture.  This pair depict a ship/yacht, lighthouse and harbour.  This style of cufflink was popular around the middle of the 20th century. Sporting and animal motives were particularly liked.  The pictures are covered by a piece of perspex.  The back of this pair is marked GM.  I always though this referred to General Motors – who did make cufflinks – but it seems unlikely that these were made by them.  These cufflinks have a bar that links the picture part to the plain, oval shaped piece that goes on the back of the cuff.          ADDITIONAL INFORMATION – Before the 1920s cufflinks were an essential item for a gentleman’s outfit.  With the advent of the sports shirt cufflinks became an option rather than a necessity.  During WWII jewellery for men was a low priority.  After the war there was a renewed interest in cufflinks and this style of gold tone cufflinks with sporting and animal themes were popular and affordable for the majority of people.          MEASUREMENTS AND CONDITION –  The condition is good.  Often this style of vintage cufflink is worn or aged.  The picture on this pair is clear and the gold tone shiny.  They measure about 11/16th of an inch across.
