Description
This is a Charles Horner snake brooch in navy and chrome – with green diamante eyes. It is made of a casein plastic which Horner named ‘Dorcasine’. Horner’s use of Dorcasine increased when the sales of silver hatpins etc. dropped. They make buttons, knitting needles, sewing related products, propelling pencils etc. They also made some costume jewellery. This varies in quality/design. My favourites are the snake, the spider, the beetle and the woman’s head. Until the book – ‘Charles Horner of Halifax’ (Tom J. Lawson – GML Publishing) was published very few people knew that Horner’s ventured into Dorcasine production and costume jewellery making. These items have now become quite collectible and are harder to find. The brooch is just over 3 inches in length and is in good condition.
