DESCRIPTION – A small, Art Deco period dress clip. Made in red glass with a silver coated edging and central decoration. It is a good example of an Art Deco vintage dress clip and may have been one of a pair – It has a brass clip on the back to attach it to a garment. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION – Dress clips were very popular in the period 1920-early 1950s. The style of dress clips made during this period varied enormously. I have seen them made in a variety of sizes and every sort of material. Some were made by famous manufacturers and others were small and understated. Hundreds of small diamante one were made. Often people are puzzled about how to wear them. The obvious way is clipped on to dresses etc. at the neckline – or on a coat lapel – or through a buttonhole. One could sit on the V of a V-necked garment. A pair could be used on a square necked dress. I often wear mine hanging on a chain round my neck if the clip fitting will take it. I have photographed this one with quite a thick chain but fine ones will also work. Another trick is to fasten a safety pin from the back of a garment – so that a bar appears on the front. The dress clip can then be clipped over the bar. If you are worried about losing it – there is usually a hole on the back fitting to attach a safety pin -which can be pinned to the garment. I do like to have a good selection in my shop at Alfies Antiques in central London. MEASUREMENTS AND CONDITION: The dress clip measures approx. 1 5/8 x 3/4 inches. The front of the clip is undamaged. The back has a brass clip fitting which has an aged appearance. The clip works well.
